Goa 2007

For sometime we had been planning a long family trip to Goa. As everybody is married in our GANG, we planned to go to Goa with wife and kids and have great fun. As most of us were free we thought of going on Dec 1st. As this is the season time in Goa, the place will be heavily crowded in December and January with lot of activities happening out there.

Preparation

The problem of making decisions started even before we began the trip. Due to some unavoidable circumstances few guys could not come with their families. As only few were left with bringing their family, we dropped the idea of family trip two days before the departure. So this trip became a bachelor’s trip. Convincing our wife was a problem initially. But we all managed to do it. Now the question was regarding the transport. The options were to take two Accent Cars (Murali’s and sher’s) or go in a TT (Tempo Traveller). Finally we decided to go in the TT as everybody will be together, and this would also shield our risks of a long journey. After working out on the choices we decided on the TT with AC + Push back seats + DVD player.

It would cost huge money to hire a TT with these facilities, but getting a big vehicle would mean a comfortable journey. Our choice turned out to be a good one. At the end of the journey, we were glad that we took this TT other than the Leg space which was uncomfortable. As we were fewer guys it did not matter much. As a good part of the journey was spent in the TT with lot of entertainment by everyone, as most of the guys with us were experts in the routes to Goa we did not have much of a problem.
The Dates of the trip – December 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th.

Route:

The Route from Bangalore was first going to Tumkur to Davengere and to Hubli to Karwar and Finally to Goa.

Day One, 1st Dec 7-30 PM
Bangalore to Davengere

Here we go, all set for the Big trip.

Sunil who had gone to Nigeria on this official work and was supposed to come directly from Bombay to Goa on 2nd Dec morning. Mahesh’s parents and his son were supposed to come back from his native place, so he decided to come on the next day. And we were supposed to pick up Viji from Davengere as he has gone for some work. So from Bangalore were only five guys in the TT. The starting point was from Sher’s house. We had decided to leave Bangalore at 7-30 PM. As usual, we were late against the planned time. By the time we were altogether and settled in the TT it was 9-30.

Here we go to Goooaaaa……

Initially we were very busy pulling each one’s legs regarding not bringing the family for this trip, which was responsible for not making this to happen. Everybody was pointing at Prasadi that he was responsible. It was real fun seeing everybody defending themselves. As we had taken a hired vehicle we were least bothered about the traffic and the road. The whole journey was slow but there was no risk involved. Though the driver was driving slowly, all the credit goes to him for bringing us back safe. The first part of the journey had very heavy traffic. Then traffic became smooth. As we were entering Tumkur, when we told the Driver to put Shiva movie which Sher had bought. After watching the movie for some times all of us started sleeping.

Day Two, 2nd Dec 4-30 AM
Davengere to Karwar

We met Viji in Davengere at 3-30 in the morning . Now the real fun started as Viji talks a lot. You give him a topic and he talks about it. It’s real fun to have him whenever we go for a long drive. We all spoke for some time in the TT and slept. When we woke up it was almost 6-00 AM in the morning and the Driver was still driving towards Goa. We were supposed to take a deviation 20Kms after Hubli towards Karwar. Time for us to go to Nature’s call. We stopped at a near by Dabha. As there were fields allover, it was not a problem to get our-self fresh. We had early morning tea and again inquired about the route to Goa. After lot of talks and inquires we decided the best will be Via Karwar.
So headed towards Karwar. We had breakfast in a small town before Karwar. All were enjoying the heavy Breakfast except Prasadi who always cribs about food. Whatever he orders was not nice to him. He thinks he is the best Cook…so he is. We all say that…. By this time we got a call from Sunil that he has reached Goa. We asked him to check-in to the resort (Sterling Resorts) which we had booked. We still had a long way to go…Murali was already loosing patience that the driver was slow and the TT was uncomfortable. Every time he used to feel uncomfortable, he used to tell that it would be great to bring own cars so that we could go faster and comfortably. We reached Karwar at 10-00AM. We could see a ship parked (anchored). Karwar has one of the safest and the finest harbors in our country. Arabs had Sea Trade with Karwar in ancient days. Baithkol is the oldest natural port used by Arabs. In 1510 A. C. Portuguese conquered the area. Then followed Britishers and Shivaji Maharaja Region. It was in the possession of Britishers till the dawn of Independence. The Port is being fully developed to be the biggest and the safest port in Asia. Foundation stone for Naval base called “SEA BIRD" was laid by the Prime Minister on 24.10.1986. Kaiga Atomic Energy Project is located at Kaiga. With these developments Karwar has gained international importance in trade. Fisheries are another main source for development of Karwar. Prawn and Makerel are famous varieties of fish which are in great demand in western countries.

From now on we drew on the NH 17 all the way north until we reach Panaji. The Highway runs close to the coast and sometimes you get a good view of the sea from the road. The drive had a beautiful Scenic spots all the way as you get sea on your left side all the way. The road was in pretty good condition all the way. We noticed that the road was going on a hill and we could see the beautiful beach around 2kms away from the road. It was a pretty long beach and there was lot of greenery near the beach. There were lot of fishermen on the seashore working with their boats and nets. We were able to see few fisherman boats deep in the sea that had gone for fishing.

Karwar to Panaji, Goa

After Karwar our last destination in the route was Panaji, Goa. After some driving we came to the Karnataka-Goa Border. We paid the road tax there and headed towards Panaji. Now the roads are good but quite narrow. We have now entered Goooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Goa-The smallest state in India with the tersest name but with one of the biggest bang for your bucks if you want to generally - ‘chill out’ as the new generation phrases it. All this while since the day I saw the movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, I was thoroughly influenced to believe that all you can do in Goa is have fun. To Us Goa was more of a photographic destination with very interesting people and architecture. The dressing style and much of the architecture is of course influenced by the Portuguese who stayed here very late in history.

We came to Madgaon which is on the way to Panaji. As we had booked in Sterling resorts we were supposed to go Extreme North of Goa, we had still long way to go. We thought of taking a break. But thinking of Suni and more importantly the Beach (Vagator) waiting for us, we thought we will go straight to the resort. We reached the Resort around 3-30PM. Suni had lost patience waiting for us. By this time he had explored the place and had gathered lot of information round the resort. He had taken a good massage in the resort and gone to Sleep. We woke him and discussed about the places around the resort. As we were very eager to jump into the beach, went out to the beach. It was around 1.5 kms long beach.

After walking till the end of the beach we found boulders. Initially we thought this is the end of the beach. When Suni climbed the rocks and showed us the other side which was a beautiful private beach which stretches to about a kilometer. Just beside the beach you will be able to see a fort on top of the hill. It’s called Chapora Fort which as become famous from the time of Dil Chata hai movie. On the other side of the fort, Mondovi River gets connected to the Sea. The soft white sands, the black lava rocks, the coconut palms, the lush landscape, nature playing its own music, and overlooked by the 500-year old Portuguese fort. The world famous Anjuna beach lies to the south of Vagator. There was two shops build of Coconut leaves, which is not a permanent structure. You get everything from snacks to liquor. Suni had booked two beach beds which will be just beside the beach.

Goa is a famous destination for foreigners due to the lovely beach view and trekking options it has to offer other than the relatively secluded environment and we already started seeing lots of foreigners all busy sunbathing. Sunbathing was a concept we could not subscribe to as we anyway get baked in Bangalore in the simmering perennial heat way, so we decided to sit there and take a walk around the beach. We all removed our clothes and with the bare essentials walked into the water to find that the depth is not much nor is the waves that are powerful. We played around for some time and came to get ourselves fresh with some drinks (????). By this time we had made friends with the shop people. His name was Nagesh. Whenever we wanted anything, we would just call his name and it will be on our table immediately. We became very popular around the place.

It is actually a little embarrassing when you have a foreigner wearing one skimpy top showing 95% skin right next to you, and mind you, that is the real height of temptation, with nothing much to do on a lonely beach, one’s eyes hardly misses such darshan. As and when you look in another direction there’s another lady sunbathing in that direction. This is what god calls the Problem of Plenty. As we were enjoying the chilled drinks and Bread amlette all of a sudden in the distance a lady takes off her top and has a tiny dress that more so confirms that she has something on top. But functionally as a cover it doesn’t seem to be of any use… Not that we mind :-). Even biology would not have taught us so much about female anatomy as the Goa trip taught us in a couple of days in Vagator beach

We spend rest of the evening at the beach lazing around. The Sunset was a magnificent sight to watch. We saw foreigners doing Yoga. There were few boats and Cruises enjoying the night on the river, we all wished we were on those boats and going deep inside the sea. In the mean time Mahesh had called to say that he has got the bus and he will be arriving in Goa at 8-00AM on Sunday morning.

We came back to the resort got ourselves freshen up, and settled for a small walk in the night to see Goa. As Sunil had experienced the taste of food in the resort and had a bad time, we decided to eat outside. We settled down in a restaurant which was nearby to the resort. Viji had a good time in experimenting different kinds of Fishes. Sher and me joined the party. Viji had ordered King Fish (Tondor). Murali and Suni enjoyed Chicken. Harsha and Prasadi were with their usual Veg food. The best part was that there was lot of drinks. Then an incident happened which Prasadi will never forget in his life. We had ordered Veg subji which the waiter bought chicken subji and prasadi ate it. Just then Viji tasted it and he got a bone. By the time Viji told prasadi that it was a non-veg food which they had served to them and stop eating it. As Harsha and Prasadi being a Brahmans, Harsha called the manager and blasted him. We managed not to pay the food bills. Good this happened that we saved nearly 650RsJJ. By the time we came back to the resort it was 11-00PM. All hit the bed thinking of getting up early and going to the beach early morning.

Day Three, 3rd Dec 6-30 AM

By the time we woke up Sher, Harsha and Viji had already gone to the beach. When Murali, Prasadi and Me reached the beach, these guys were doing prayanama. Sher was the teacher for them as he does everyday at home. We too joined the group. End of the prayanama, we were feeling very fresh. We were talking about Yoga after the practice of Prayanama, In the meantime Harsha left for a walk to the end of the beach. There was a trek route to the top of the fort, seeing that in mind, I went after him and told him the idea of climbing the hill. We started climbing upwards and it took nearly 20 mins for us to reach the top of hill. It was a magnificent view to watch the sea from the top. The rest of the guys followed us to the top of the hill. Everyone was so amazed by the beauty of the nature. You can keep seeing the sea which has got a magnificent view. Nature is so beautiful. Nothing in front of nature. You can have an Arial view of the Vagator beach and the fort using the link given below.

We spend some time there on top of the hill. Seeing the beauty of the nature. We
walked around 2-3 kilometers and spending around 2 hours on the beach and on top of the hill wondering about the creativity and the forces of nature as to how could this sea, which is a source of life and income for so many people around the world, can take lakhs of lives in just a few minutes (remember last year’s Tsunami?)?

Suni called us to tell that Mahesh has arrived and they are having breakfast. Hunger beckoned us at the name of breakfast. So we left for the resort. We climbed down the fort directly to the resort. Suni and Mahesh had already ordered for us. So we did not waste much time having breakfast, we again left for the beach, hanging around for some time. Just when we all were swimming, there came a fishermen boat…As Harsha is very good at talking and convincing people, he managed to make the fishermen to agree to take us inside the sea. This boat journey scared the shit out of us and the tides in the sea literally made us go in the sinusoidal 50 degree angles to the water which was coming in and out. That was a very good journey going deep inside the sea where we were able to see some dolphins. The driver stopped the boat deep inside the sea as we were watching dolphins. The best part came when the fishermen told us it was safe to swim. Immediately Harsha Mahesh, Sher and me dived into the sea without wearing lifejackets. We all are expert swimmers; still it is very different swimming in the sea than swimming in the Pool. Our body was full of salt water and mud when we came on board. Never start the boat journey during the evening as we had started the boat journey in the evening the tides will be high. Though we were in the boat we all got wet, Thanks that our camera survived. We literally had our heart in our mouth throughout the journey. The ride was for about 2 hours.

We came back to the beach and called Nagesh for some????? And snacks. We spend most of the time in the beach lazing around letting go our entire bare chest to the sun.

It was time now to go to the Cuisine (a big ship which takes you inside the sea, with the local group entertaining). This Cruise was on the Mondovi River. It was a different kind of fun which lasts for about one hour. It teaches us the culture and lifestyle of the people of goan in a big way. By the time we came back to our TT the time was 8-45PM. Time for Dinner. Thinking again of the Fish curries and Chicken made us hungrier. On the way back to the hotel we stopped at a good restaurant. Any hotel in Goa the food will taste solid. We will guarantee on it. We had a good meal there. Again Prasadi started cribbing about food. After a heavy meal we went back to the resort. This was the last night in Goa, so most of us were awake till late in the night discussing about the Experiences in Goa. We decided to come back again some time next Year. Yet to finalize on the dates.

Day Three, 4th Dec 6-30 AM

Again time for Yoga, with the guidance of our Guru (Sher) on the rocks of the beach side. By this time Murali had called home to speak to his son. As he was missing his son, he decided to go back by flight. After enquiring, he booked a ticket which was at 4 PM in the afternoon. We were at the beach for some more time and came back to pack our bags. By the time we Checked-out the resort it was around 12-00PM. We stopped the vehicle at the nearby shop to buy some dresses. Everybody became busy buying dresses for their children. After that we all had a quick Lunch and dropped Murali to the nearest place to the Airport to catch the Flight. Our long journey back to Bangalore started. We were not as worried as we had a entertainer who talks non stop (VIJI). Even the drive back was good. Most of the drive was thru a lot of greenery. Though it was dark, we could get the smell of the Western ghat trees. Again the road started getting Steep and Curvy Climbs.

Now the route was through Karwar-Honnavar-Sagar, which is very close to Jog falls. Honnavar is a small town where NH206 meets the NH17 costal highway. We were very eager to see Jog falls which is the tallest in India. But we did not stop there as it had become dark. Everybody were exhausted and wanted to take as much rest as possible so that we could go back to office next morning. We had a light dinner on the highway and all settled in the TT for the long night journey to Bangalore. In no time everybody slept. We all woke up at 6-00AM. We had arrived in Bangalore … HOME SWEET HOME…

It was one of the most wonderful and freaky trips we all had gone. We are again planning to go to the same place.
